ORLANDO, Florida - 6 June 2012: IBM (NYSE: IBM) IBM today announced a range of new software solutions that will help customers create software applications faster and with higher quality across multiple development environments including cloud, mobile and complex systems.

The software world’s push toward continuously evolving systems necessitates consistency and collaboration across the entire software lifecycle and supply chain. Often software development teams are struggling to meet business expectations due to a lack of hard facts – shared data and a consistent context across organizational boundaries, exposed through clear and honest metrics.

To address these challenges, IBM is introducing a new version of its integrated software Collaborative Lifecycle Management (CLM) solution with extended design management capabilities.  CLM is built on IBM’s open development platform, Jazz and brings together IBM Rational Requirements Composer, IBM Rational Team Concert, and IBM Rational Quality Manager in one easy-to-install and easy-to-use solution.  The new CLM software ensures that software design is integrated with the rest of the software application development lifecycle. Development teams are then able to seamlessly collaborate on the design and development of software with key stakeholders from across the business.

According to preliminary findings of an IBM Institute for Business Value Global Study on software delivery*, more than three fourths of the participating organizations said they are underprepared for major technology trends that will impact their competitiveness.  These trends include the proliferation of mobile devices; the ability to leverage Cloud-based resources for flexibility and savings; and the growing percentage of smart products with embedded software. While 50% of organizations believe successful software delivery is crucial to their competitive advantage, only 25% currently leverage it.

“Today’s business dilemma is how to address both the need for rapid delivery and required control in the software development process,” said Dr. Kristof Kloeckner, general manager, IBM Rational. “We must balance the need for speed and agility with better governance to manage cost and quality, achieve regulatory compliance, ensure security, and have some level of financial predictability.”

Top Bank in China Transforms Core Processes

China Merchants Bank (CMB), headquartered in Shenzhen, China, has over 800 branches, more than 50,000 employees and is cited as one of the world’s top 100 banks.  China Merchant’s Bank environment spans IBM System z and IBM Power platforms. With geographically dispersed developers responsible for modernizing core banking and credit card processing applications, collaboration became essential. CMB used IBM Rational CLM software capabilities to create a multiplatform application lifecycle management (ALM) environment to help automate their development processes and break down skills silos for effective cross-teaming.

“IBM Rational Developer and ALM tools were brought into our credit card migration and core banking system project,” said Zhanwen Chen, manager of configuration management, China Merchants Bank. “Replacing older tools and coordinating the efforts of our 1,000+ developers improved our quality and performance.”

Dev/Ops in the Cloud

In a typical organization, it may take weeks or months to deliver a development change, due to infrastructure and configuration, testing and manual deployment, and lack of collaboration between development and operations teams.  Continuous software delivery in the cloud allows customers to continuously and automatically deliver changes across the enterprise software delivery lifecycle, spanning development, application testing and operations. With a “DevOps” approach in the Cloud, customers can reduce time to market and automate changes in development, test and production. IBM is supporting cloud delivery, development and operations with new solutions, including:

·         IBM SmartCloud for Government development and test platform as a service delivers industry-leading Rational tools for government agencies in a highly scalable, elastic computing environment for agencies that want the cost savings of a shared cloud environment combined with Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) security.

·         IBM SmartCloud Continuous Delivery managed beta via a hosted sandbox in the cloud, provides an hands-on-experience of DevOps capabilities enabling accelerated code-to-deploy through automation, standardization repeatable processes and improved coordination and visibility among dev, test and Ops teams.

IBM Rational CLM has also been extended to the IBM Mobile Foundation platform for centralized code sharing and distributed mobile application development. Currently, fragmentation of mobile devices, tools, and platforms complicate delivery of mobile applications that typically have faster time-to-market and more frequent releases. The IBM Enterprise Mobile Development solution helps teams apply an end-to-end lifecycle management process to design, develop, test and deploy mobile applications while enabling seamless integration with enterprise back-end systems and cloud services through mobile-optimized middleware. The Enterprise Mobile Development solution brings together several offerings that optimize the recent Worklight acquisition as well as IBM enterprise development environments, including:

Green Hat Technology in New IBM Test Automation Solutions

Today's applications and manufactured products put additional pressures on development teams to find innovative ways to attain agility and increase the rate that software updates are delivered for testing.  IBM has integrated the recently acquired Green Hat technology with IBM Rational CLM to help address the challenges of testing highly integrated and complex systems and simplify the creation of virtual test environments. ORLANDO, Florida - 6 June 2012: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced it is working with Syracuse University to help college students build smarter computing skills to manage both traditional and new systems in large global enterprises.

As business value creation increasingly shifts to software, the software skills needed to tackle disruptive technologies like cloud and mobile, particularly for enterprise-class, large industrial systems, have become critical.  Lack of employee skills in software technologies is cited as the top barrier preventing organizations from leveraging software for a competitive advantage, according to initial findings in IBM’s Institute for Business Value 2012 Global Study,on Software Delivery*.

Syracuse University’s Global Enterprise Technology (GET) curriculum is an interdisciplinary program focused on preparing students for successful careers in large-scale, technology-driven global operating environments.  A consortium of technology partners, including IBM, provides technology platforms and multiple systems experience for the GET students. IBM’s Rational Developer for System z (RDz) and z Enterprise Systems help students build applications on multiple systems platforms, including z/OS, AIX, Linux and Windows.

“Our students need to build relevant skills to address the sheer growth of computing and Big Data,” said David Dischiave, assistant professor and the director of the graduate Information Management Program in the School of Information Studies (iSchool) at Syracuse University.  “These courses and the IBM technology platform help prepare students to build large global data centers, allow them to work across multiple systems, and ultimately gain employment in large global enterprises.”

Close to 500 students have participated in the Global Enterprise Technology minor since its inception. Syracuse University’s iSchool is the No. 1 school for information systems study, as ranked by U.S. News and World Report, and serves as a model for other iSchools that are continuing to emerge around the globe.

According to IBM's 2012 Global CEO Study, including input from more than 1,700 Chief Executive Officers from 64 countries and 18 industries worldwide, a majority (71 percent) of global CEOs regard technology as the number one factor to impact an organization’s future over the next three years – considered to be an even bigger change agent than shifting economic and market conditions.  

Mainframe Application Development Skills In Demand

More than 120 new clients worldwide that have chosen the IBM mainframe platform as a backbone of their IT infrastructure since the IBM zEnterprise system was introduced in July 2010.  The zEnterprise is a workload-optimized, multiarchitecture system capable of hosting many workloads integrated together, and efficiently managed as a single entity.

New IBM Software Helps Strengthen Security of Mobile Devices in the Workplace

Increases in mobile exploits and concerns from security executives around BYOD adoption leads to enhanced security intelligence capabilities

ORLANDO, Florida - 6 June 2012: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced new software to help organizations develop mobile applications that are more secure by design. Now, clients can build security into the initial design of their mobile applications so that vulnerabilities will be detected early in the development process. Today's announcement further expands IBM's strategy to provide clients with a mobile platform that spans application development, integration, security and management.

With more than five billion mobile devices in the world - and only 2 billion computers - the shift to mobile devices as the primary form of connecting to corporate networks is increasing rapidly. Securing those devices is becoming a top priority for security executives and CIOs. As companies embrace the growing "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) trend, the need to secure the applications that run on these devices is becoming more critical. According to the 2011 IBM X-Force Trend and Risk Report, mobile exploits increased by 19 percent in 2011. In addition, according to the recently released data from the IBM Center for Applied Insights study, 55 percent of respondents cited mobile security as a primary technology concern over the next two years.

The rapid consumerization of mobile endpoints, applications and services has created the urgent need to secure corporate applications on employees' devices. With the latest release of the IBM Security AppScan portfolio, IBM now offers a robust application development security solution, allowing clients to integrate mobile application security testing throughout the application lifecycle.

"The ability to scan native and hybrid mobile applications for security vulnerabilities is a major step forward in securing sensitive data and mitigating security risks."

Security On the Go

Mobile applications represent a new threat target, since they carry a higher risk of attack compared to web application vulnerabilities. Attackers are increasingly focusing on mobile applications because many organizations are not aware of the security risks introduced by the most basic mobile applications. Beyond the traditional threats, for example, a hacker could perform a SQL injection or scripting attack on the applications. Mobile applications also come under attack from malware and phishing, or scanning QR codes with malicious scripts.  Additionally, mobile applications have vulnerabilities specific to mobile devices because they often store sensitive data that can be leaked to malicious applications. This data, once stored locally, typically is outside the protection of the corporate security programs. The new AppScan analysis capabilities will find these vulnerabilities to help developers build more secure mobile applications.

“Providing clients with the ability to scan mobile applications for vulnerabilities--including applications developed in-house and outsourced is the next step of our mobile strategy," said Marc van Zadelhoff, vice president of Strategy and Product Management, IBM Security Systems. "With more than 120,000 of our own employees accessing IBM's network through mobile devices, we have had to focus heavily on developing a way for employees to work safely and securely."

Mobilizing the Workforce

With today's announcement, IBM is the first vendor to offer static application security testing (SAST) for Android applications, which allows clients to conduct their own testing for mobile applications. In the past, for mobile application security testing to be done, clients would have to send their applications and software IP (Intellectual Property) to an offsite vendor to test for vulnerabilities. This approach doesn't scale and the response time is too slow, as mobile applications undergo constant revisions and updates. Organizations need to address mobile application security testing in-house early in the software development life cycle.

In addition to the mobile application testing capabilities, there are significant new capabilities from which customers can benefit:

·         Integration with IBM's QRadar Security Intelligence Platform allows for increased Security Intelligence when an application is moved into production.

·         By correlating known application vulnerabilities with user and network activity, QRadar can automatically raise or lower the priority score of security incidents.

·         A new Cross Site Scripting (XSS) analyzer which uses a learning mode to quickly evaluate millions of potential tests from less than 20 core tests.

·         This new XSS analyzer finds more XSS vulnerabilities faster than any previous version of AppScan.

·         New static analysis capabilities help companies adopt broad application security practices through simplified on-boarding of applications

·         And empowering non-security specialists to test faster than with prior releases.

·         Predefined and customizable templates that provide development teams the ability to quickly focus on a rule set prioritized by their security 
teamshelping corporations focus on key issues for them across their organization. 

In addition to the QRadar integration, AppScan offers integration points with IBM Security Network IPS and IBM Security SiteProtector, and is a regular complement sold with IBM Guardium and IBM Security Access Management solutions for end-to-end application security. The approach is to provide a comprehensive and integrated security framework for applications across the development and production lifecycle.

IBM has a broad portfolio of mobile security solutions, ranging from helping secure data on the device, to running safer mobile applications. IBM has been steadily investing in the mobile space for more than a decade, both organically and through acquisitions, building a complete portfolio of software and services that delivers enterprise-ready mobility for clients.
