IBM Establishes Institute for Advanced Security in Europe

Initiative to Foster Cyber security Collaboration with Public and Private Sector Organizations

BRUSSELS, Belgium. 1 April 2011: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced the launch of the IBM Institute for Advanced Security in Europe, an expansion of its company-wide initiative to provide government and other key organizations with a global network of security research, services, software and technology expertise.

Based in Brussels, the IBM Institute for Advanced Security in Europe is designed to help address and mitigate the issues associated with securing cyber space by:

  • connecting government and private sector organizations, academics and business partners with IBM researchservicessoftware and technology experts
  • helping organizations tap into new security technology in areas such as analytics, privacy-sensitive identity technology and encryption
  • and, offering organizations resources including podcasts, X-Force expertise, blogs and best practices that address rising security issues around cyber security, cloud computing and endpoint management.

The Institute will also provide a forum for organizations to understand how recent IBM Research advances -- such as the ability to analyze encrypted information without sacrificing confidentiality -- and wider IBM security expertise can help make decisions based on greater insight, while protecting the privacy and security of critical information.  In addition, the Centre will address specific issues such as mobile device security.

Additional resources available via the Institute for Advanced Security in Europe include briefings and demonstrations at a number of IBM Research Labs and Executive Briefing Centres, which include IBM Hursley and IBM Zurich Labs.

"We are delighted to see the launch of the IBM Institute for Advanced Security in Europe and look forward to working closely together," said Robert Havas, Chairman of the European Organisation for Security (EOS). "IT and Cyber Security are inseparable topics that require the highest attention of the European Commission. This IBM initiative will help to drive even greater awareness of security."

As the physical and digital worlds continue to collide and the planet becomes increasingly instrumented, interconnected and intelligent, the launch of the Institute in Europe reinforces IBM’s ability to help organizations better address evolving security threats.

"Our European clients rely upon vast amounts of information stored on distributed computer systems and openly shared across public and private networks -- yet they are struggling to effectively secure this critical information,” said Martin Borrett, Director of the IBM Institute for Advanced Security in Europe. “The Institute for Advanced Security will link these organisations with IBM's broad array of security scientists, researchers and experts to help them understand the complex issues associated with addressing their cyber security challenges.”

IBM will apply the capabilities and experience of its 15,000 multi-disciplinary security expertsworldwide to address a broad range of cyber security challenges.  With more than 3,000 security and risk management patents, and one of the world’s largest comprehensive threats and vulnerabilities databases, IBM is well positioned to help global organisations mitigate their security concerns.

With more than 40 years of security development and innovation, IBM possesses an unparalleled breadth and depth of research, products, services, consulting and global business partners to deliver end-to-end security. IBM has nine worldwide research labs innovating security technology and nine security operations centers around the world that help global clients maintain the appropriate security posture.
